The First The Best
March 2, 2008
‘Discussing with a friend whether the first or second thoughts are the best, we came to the conclusion that first thoughts are our best because they are generally generous impulses. It is after we weigh matters over, as a rule, that we decide it would be foolish to do certain things for other people because we can’t afford it, or it would be against our own interests. Usually our first impulses are to lend a helping hand to our friends and neighbours, even if we do have to go to the wall ourselves.’

But yours is only an example, and it is misleading. Should I help? The impulse is yes. Fine.
Should I tell my boss to go to hell? First impulse: yes. Probably wrong.

Hi shayli! this reminds me of a lecture i went to recently. Discussed was that game psychologists like to play where they say a word and you say the first thing that comes to your head. Similar to your discussion about first/second thoughts. It’s all about your super-ego (values through upbringing, what your parents taught you were right/wrong) and your instincts etc. by saying it as soon as it comes to mind, you’re avoiding a sort of ‘filter’ that hte super-ego puts infront of (usually) your instinct, a filter that might be telling you if you were to first think about waht you’re going to blurt out as ‘embarrassing’ or ‘weird’. So i guess the first thought would be more true to your instinctual behviour
