Once while I was sucked into the never-ending universe of http://www.trendhunter.com/ I came out with the name Piers Atkinson. Not only is he an insanely awesome milliner – he also uses a few of the big name Club Kids from London as his models. Presuming he is in with that lot – I might even party with him one day.

His recent collection for A/W 2010 is mysteriously named ‘It’s Later Than You Think’ and features a lot of black netted fascinators and general funeral/gothic elements. But don’t go thinking it’s a bunch of hats – do normal hats have spears and rollers and teeth and ken dolls on them? Yeah get back in your box…

Avril Lavigne was my tweenage idol. I remember when I would listen to her album over and over – feeling all those wrought emotions that teenagers do. I wanted to be a little punky tom-chick who was friends with all the boys and went to rock shows and milled with her buddies in the front row. Actually I did do most of that and maybe more.

I am sad to say that for a period in my life she was forgotten. That was until I found myself sitting amongst a couple of guys in a loungeroom watching all her videos over and over. It was then that they pointed out to me that she is hot. She is actually really hot…

Let us take a moment to reminisce a time when we listened to these tunes and felt the emotions burn inside us. When we used to burst into tears more often than not and yell at anyone that wouldn’t let us do what we wanted.

Amen.

Well what can I say? I got carried away with reality and didn’t waste a minute trying to document it. But just for another slice of life I thought I might leave some sweet pictures of insects for you to soak up over the next lengthy period before my next post (who knows when that will be). Birthday Suit - Show Invitation

Sydney fashion week is long gone – but left with it is a strong and colourful memory of the Birthday Suit Gala event at the Sydney Opera House. For starters it was my first time inside the opera house – where I realized that it was probably the first piece of brutalist architecture that I have ever liked. Here I entered the Utzon room where I felt rather at home amongst an audience of both artists and designers who – dare I say were better dressed than a lot of the audience at the actual RAFW shows.

The collection is designed by two extremely talented members of The KingPins (Sydney performance artist group) and one particularly amazing piece was a collaboration with artist Garth Knight who I am wanting to research more about. The show was opened by Maya Martinez in a billowing black costume that appeared very birdlike, doing a trance-inducing dance.

When the models followed, I think what got me most was the hair-styling – headpieces made out of coloured rope, beautiful beaded deco pieces and hair wrapped up in string. Speaking to one of the models which I used at the Frock Stars event the week after, apparently it took a very long time to tie up all that hair.

Birthday Suit 2010 is for women who defy gravity, creatures who have a love affair with the sky and seek to challenge their human limitations for the adventures of flight. The forms and shapes in the collection collide both explosion and restraint by using bellowing ballooning silks with tight body fitting rope work. The explosive summer palette takes influence from the Caribbean festivals, the bird life of Papua New Guinea and the colour blocks of parachutes. A celebration of sensuality and freedom, Birthday Suit celebrates summer with a bang.

Solo Exhibition by Antochrist Acidparty

Went to the opening of Anto’s exhibition last night and it was a blast! Not only because I have been hard working in my cave for many months and saw all my friends for the first time in a long time. But because I could see everyone falling in love with the surrealist creatures swimming in colour on canvases around them. The creature herself was looking especially radiant on the night and should be proud of a brilliant turn out and quite a few sales! Get your inquisitive asses down there before I snap up the large sparkley one… (The Doctors: 102 Burton st, East Sydney)

This here is a proud picture taken by someone who has finally picked up all the fabrics for her psychedelic/deco/boob-viewable/space gown. Up the top right is a silk crepe de chine with a print by Sydney artist Eduardo (who I am collaborating with), on the left is a crystal-encrusted sheer silk, and bottom right is a treated silk.

Things are coming together really nicely and I only have three and a half weeks to go before my marking day. The collection itself is quite controversial so I have been forewarned to prepare myself a little speech about my aspirations for the avant-garde.

In unrelated news: My older brother gave me his old Nikon FM2 with bonus 3rd Eye Function. For those who want wise and all-knowing photography (thanks to Nick for lens and film).

Motion of the Heart

The other day I found out how the human heart works. I am almost positive that I gasped on the bus when Descartes told me the deal. How amazing the motion of the heart and blood is!

Currently I am reading his book on Discourse on Method and Meditations and the explanation is written as an example of the function of the organs and how they replicate that of animals. And how the only way that we defer from animals is in our reasoning.

Of course Descartes is a god-fearing man and I don’t necessarily agree with that. But he finds evidence to substantiate that our organs attend to our senses and instincts where as our soul forms that of our reasoning and can function apart from the body.

It is not an easy book to read but I can reccomend trying. For if you take the time to understand - these theories prove to be very interesting. Plus Descartes is a babe.
